I had the exact opposite frustration as a kid because I played the games first, then watched the show. I'd be in the middle of an episode like "Pikachu should *not* be able to win that against that rock type" or "how do all these great trainers keep losing to unevolved Pokémon?"
One thing I focus on with my daughter (she's 4) as we play - strategy and the why behind the game mechanics. Luckily she's played as much or more of the games as she's seen the show at this point. And we're starting with Horizons on Netflix v. the older Ash series. But focusing on how to play the game as a game we've skipped over this disappointment (because really, how hard would it have actually been all these years to have dodge mechanics?!?).
Unfortunately I think Ash is a lot cooler than me so as much as I've tried to talk through the mechanics I am not getting through to him as much as Ash is 😭
I think maybe being their first turn based rpg battle system, and comparing it to the anime I'm sure it's such a disconnect. Also, agree with nothing ash does on the show makes sense and he totally still wins for it haha.
I asked my 9 year old if he had any advice and he pointed out that increasing the friendship with your Pokémon improves the chance of an attack missing. There are also other benefits, like your Pokémon has a higher chance of hanging on with 1HP or recovering from a status effect. I'd relate this to the way Ash is said to have an unusually close bond with his Pokémon or that he seems to understand them in a way that other trainers don't.
As a parent, I'd also say if you give it time your kid will soon excel in the game as they are like Pokémon knowledge sponges. He'll be able to handle a different set of information and remember details that may well escape you...
Don’t let anyone tell you it doesn’t work that way! As a kid I would grind the elite 4 in Pokemon Blue and my level 90 Blastoise could take out anything, despite type advantage 🙈
I’m pretty sure this ridiculous leveling has been nerfed in later games, but don’t let it stop you! 😅
No one else knows how Ash does it either, as I remember other trainers in the anime looking at him like “wth is he doing, that’ll never work”.

Lol, I feel that. It's hard to out-hero their heroes 🤣

I love this, thank you! Your 9 year old has a really great take.
