I agree this is probably a good middle-ground. This was pretty much the same solution that we came up with at Club Penguin more than a decade ago. Of course there was also regular (though heavily filtered) chat there, but some parents chose to only let kids use quick chats. As a writer, the fun part was adding in new phrases for each in-game event. "Use the force!" for Star Wars, etc. We even hid story easter eggs and secrets in there.

Sounds like they finally learned something from Rocket League. "What a save!" and "Nice shot!" is enough for any situation.
