Fair enough, I suppose. I’ve never been crazy about paying for digital accessories, but I get that it’s probably just a “me” problem than it is a problem with the world.
But I hate the idea of being kept on a hook with something a game keeps dangling in front of you, playing on people’s sense of FOMO.
I 100% agree! It was a really rough thing for me to give in to, and you're totally right about what you said. Kids are really impressionable, so I try to explain things with a balance of treating yourself sometimes but not getting carried away. Parenting is hard haha 🥲
Great article! Your genuine openness and curiosity in the face of the (very understandable) kneejerk no is something I aspire to; it is too easy to be dismissive of what kids want to buy online, particularly when there are so many people trying to take advantage of them!
Absolutely! And I try to remember that kids are actual humans with emotions; they're just trying to figure the world out like us lol. Trying to explain balance while not using parental power to just deny everything you wouldn't buy is hard!
Made me think of my former boss, Emily Greer, and her GDC talk about not demeaning 'whales' and virtual purchases ... she describes her figure skating hobby and how the spending there provides mostly intangible value to her. Thought I'd share:
