Kind of sucks to lock assist mode and the like to the switch 2 version. Wish they would patch it into the old version too

Agreed. The one solace, I think, is that I'd expect these are guaranteed to whatever sequel is coming down the line. I hope, in general, it's a shift for Nintendo.

I echo the sentiment in other comments about wishing Assist Mode would get patched back into the Switch 1 version (partly because it would make it that much easier for me to position the Switch 1 as "the kids' Switch"), but this does sound great. We've been getting by in Super Mario Wonder lately through the following combo:

* Playing on my largely-complete save file, which has more than enough lives to withstand a handful of deaths every level

* Picking relatively easy levels to replay

* Leaning on the fact that both my 6 & 3-year-olds *love* to play as Yoshi (and different colors, thankfully)

* Using the Safety Bounce badge, which is usually enough to bounce my 3-year-old across some of the gaps that he tends to walk right into.

I think Assist Mode would open up a lot more of the game to both of my kids, though.

Man, I forgot about the deaths thing!

We upgraded to a switch 2 over the weekend (our release-era switch's fan had crapped out) - our 2-year old is fascinated by some of the Mario gear around the house, so we were talking about getting Wonder to let her fiddle around in. Sounds like waiting for the updated edition may be worth it. (She did enjoy making Mario spin in Galaxy)

Saw the update trailer and immediately thought of this blog haha. I’m curious if the same character restriction in Wonder is just a result of them not wanting to do the logistics of having duplicate characters on the same screen (vs. Mario Kart’s split screen) while allowing players to tell them apart. Nothing that different color outfits or outlines couldn’t solve of course

It's a good question. Wish I could get an answer on it, too.

If this doesnt come to switch 1 that is not okay. It was sad explaining originally to my child that they couldn't transform in order to not get hurt, now knowing it will be out there but Nintendo is greedily putting it behind a next Gen paid upgrade sucks. Nintendo continually frustrates with this stuff, which is doubly frustrating that they do so much right. Theyre the best in the business at family friendly gaming, but they are so anti consumer.

My understanding is this is exclusive to Switch 2 but I'll try to get a more concrete answer.
